Arnott's: an Australian icon.
Millions of Australians have grown up with Arnott's during the past 144 years. For them, Arnott's is more than a food company - it's a piece of Australia's history and a national icon.
One of the largest food companies
Arnott's is one of the largest food companies in the Asia Pacific region, with a very bright future. Arnott's ongoing growth has been supported by the Campbell Soup Company's investment in Arnott's and its iconic brands.
Jobs for 2,600 Australians
More than 50,000 Australians have worked with Arnott's during the past century. Today, Arnott's employs more than 2,600 Australians across all States and Territories. Arnott's also employs several thousand people across the Asia Pacific region, in countries such as New Zealand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan.
A $ 350 million investment in state-of-the-art Australian manufacturing
Since 1997, we have invested more than $350 million in our Australian biscuit and snack facilities including:
* $27 million for new ovens and equipment at Arnott's Marleston Bakery in South Australia.
* $19 million upgrading Arnott's Huntingwood Bakery in New South Wales.
* $9.4 million upgrading the Virginia bakery in Queensland.
Supporting rural and regional Australia
In the past decade, we've spent more than $3 billion purchasing raw ingredients and services from local farmers and businesses.
Every year, we spend around $300 million buying:
* 70,000 tonnes of flour and grains from areas including the Darling Downs, Moree, Riverina, South Australia and Western Australia. Some farmers, like those in the Riverina growing soft wheat, can sell their entire crops to Arnott's
* 25,000 tonnes of sugar from far North Queensland
* 3,900 tonnes of dairy products from Victoria
* 405 tonnes of canola oil sourced from canola crops in Western New South Wales.
An Australian icon with a global future
Arnott's exports continue to grow, with Australian-made biscuits now being shipped to more than 40 countries around the world including Japan, the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Indonesia, Tahiti and New Zealand.
Arnott's Foundation Helping Aussie Families
The Arnott's Foundation aims to "create positive environments that allow families to build, maintain and enjoy a better quality of life". Through the Foundation, Arnott's supports projects including:
* Driver Reviver - ensuring safer driving, particularly during family holiday times.
* Fairy Sparkle Garden Project - building magical garden areas for children in hospital.
* FoodBank Australia - helping welfare agencies provide food to people in need. Arnott's donated more than 232,468 tonnes of biscuits to Foodbank in 2008.
* Camp Quality - Arnott's Foundation's support will enable more than 1,500 families with children who have cancer to participate in Camp Quality's Family Camps
In 1865, a small bakery opened in Hunter Street, Newcastle, north of Sydney, New South Wales. It supplied bread, pies and biscuits to the local townspeople as well as to the crews of the many ships that docked at the port to load coal. From these humble beginnings rose a company whose name is now synonymous with Australia's favourite biscuits and snacks.
Today, Arnott's employs thousands of people and supplies biscuits to more than 40 countries around the world. Millions of Australians have grown up on Arnott's and for them, Arnott's is more than a food company, it's a piece of Australia's history.
Arnott's and the Environment
Our impact on the environment
As one of the largest food companies in Asia Pacific, Arnott's has an environmental policy in place that reflects its commitment to conduct business in a manner that respects and protects the quality of the environment, striving towards limiting emissions to the water, air and land, and the efficient use of resources.
That's why we work closely with water authorities, like Sydney Water, to identify opportunities for reducing water consumption. Back in 2001, our Smithfield facility, which produces around 360 different types of savoury snack products, was using 850,000 litres of water per day. By 2004, we'd cut total water usage by nearly half to less than 500,000 litres per day.
And Arnott's Marleston bakery has made significant progress in the past 18 months in reducing waste and water consumption by installing, among other things, a $390,000 waste-water treatment plant.
As well as helping to protect water, Arnott’s is also focused on reducing its energy consumption and has a number of programs in place at all sites.
The Company is a signatory to the National Packaging Covenant. Our action plans contain specific objectives to minimise the use of packaging material, where possible; use recyclable materials, where possible; and ensure the environmental impacts of consumer packaging waste are managed and minimised.
So far, Arnott's has:
* Converted more than 1,000 tonnes per annum of biscuit trays from unrecyclable polystyrene to recyclable PET
* Switched to making more than 5,000 tonnes of carton board (eg. for use on boxed products like Shapes and Cheezels) per annum from 100% recycled board. Naturally, these cartons are also recyclable
* Reduced tinplate usage per annum by more than 40 tonnes as a result of a reduction in steel can gauge

Q: Do Arnott's biscuits contain trans fats?
A: Arnott's identified trans fatty acids (TFAs) as an issue of importance more than 10 years ago and took action then to significantly reduce the level of TFAs in their biscuits by replacing partially hydrogenated animal fats with vegetable oils. According to a World Health Organisation report, '..to promote cardiovascular health, diets should provide a very low intake of TFAs (hydrogenated oils and fats). This means an intake that is as low as possible. In practice, this implies an intake of less than 1% of daily energy intake.' We recently tested some of Arnott's most popular biscuits and all fall well below the nutrition goal stated above (the majority indicated TFA levels of <0.1%, ie. not detectable within limits of the analysis). In fact, you would need to eat 40 Arnott's Tim Tam biscuits to reach the maximum daily amount of TFAs recommended by the World Health Organisation!
Q: Are any Arnott's biscuits Halal or Kosher certified?
A: Arnott's does not certify its products sold in Australia or New Zealand based on any particular religious beliefs or social preferences.
Q: Do any of your products meet the New South Wales Healthy Schools Canteen criteria?
A: Yes, we have a large range of products that meet the criteria based on the recommended serve size including SAO, Shapes Pizza and Snack Right Fruit Slice Apricot. We can send you a comprehensive list of these products if you visit the 'Feedback' section of this website and email us your request.
Q: Do any of your products contain MSG?
A: MSG is naturally present in many foods. If any of our products contain added MSG, this would be listed as 'flavour enhancer (621)' in the ingredient list on the label.
Q: What salt do we use?
A: Arnott's uses sea salt, which is made in South Australia by evaporating seawater.
Q: Are there allergens in your products?
A: Many individuals suffer from a whole range of different allergies. That's why, if you are allergic to something in particular, you should always check to make sure it's not listed in the ingredient panel or the 'may contain' statement on any food product.
Q: Why are food additives and why are they in some Arnott's products?
A: Food additives play an important role in our food supply, ensuring our food is safe and meets the needs of consumers. Many food additives have long complex names. Sometimes these are abbreviated, sometimes not. Some have more than one name and a few include letters from the Greek alphabet! The food additives list can be confusing, so to help reduce this confusion, each food additive is given a short code number.
Q: What are antioxidants and why are they in some Arnott's products?
A: Antioxidants prevent foods deteriorating. For example, antioxidants prevent rancid flavours developing in fats and oils when they are exposed to the air.
Q: Do you use antioxidants?
A: Cooking oils, including those used in the home, contain small amounts of antioxidants to protect them during storage. Similarly, the oils we use contain small amounts of antioxidants, like Vitamin E, which are added by our supplier. Also, our Snack Right and Vita-Weat biscuits, by nature of their high fruit and wholegrain content, would contain natural levels of antioxidants.
Q: What is the difference between 'Best Before' and 'Use By'?
A: 'Best Before' is the recommended shelf life of the product; it indicates when the product should be eaten by to ensure it is fresh. 'Use By' means it must be eaten on or by that date for product safety reasons. Please visit the FSANZ (Food Standards Australia & New Zealand) website on www.foodstandards.gov.au for further information.
Q: Where does the Lecithin used in some of your products come from?
A: It's derived from soybeans. Lecithin is a very common emulsifier in a wide range of foods. It's also commonly sold in health food stores and supermarkets as a dietary supplement.
Q: What does the 'May Contain' statement on pack really mean?
A: It means the product in question may contain the ingredients listed in this statement, typically as a result of what we call 'cross-contamination'. For example, we might use a piece of baking equipment to make a product that contains peanuts, then use that same piece of equipment to make a product that doesn't contain peanuts. Even though we take great care to clean that piece of equipment between batches, there's a possibility that the second product could be exposed to trace elements of peanuts. So the 'May Contains' statements help people who suffer from all types of food allergies to make safe and informed decisions about our products.
Q: Why do you use preservatives in your food?
A: Some foods don't stay fresh without preservatives. If we add a preservative to one of our products to help it keep fresher for longer, we declare the preservative in the ingredients panel on the pack.
Q: What are Flavour Enhancers?
A: They're ingredients that enhance the existing taste and/or smell of a food. Flavour enhancers are listed in the ingredients panel along with their number. Please visit the FSANZ (Food Standards Australia & New Zealand) website on www.foodstandards.gov.au for further information.
Q: Are any Arnott's products genetically modified?
A: At Arnott's Australia/New Zealand, we're doing as much as is technically possible to ensure our products do not contain genetically modified organisms:
Our policy is to use non-GE ingredients. We audit existing and new ingredient suppliers on an ongoing basis and we've also added a provision in their contracts stipulating our requirement for non-GE ingredients. We also source, at a significant premium, identify preserved lecithin and only locally-grown corn and canola for products manufactured in Australia and New Zealand.
While we and other food manufacturers cannot, as even Greenpeace acknowledges, be completely confident that GE enzymes and processing aids are not used elsewhere in the supply chain, our policy is to use non-GE-derived ingredients, wherever possible. Again, we audit existing and new ingredient suppliers on an ongoing basis and we've also added a provision in their contracts stipulating our requirement for non-GE-derived ingredients.
Our policy is to source animal-derived ingredients from suppliers who do not use GE stockfeed, or who are committed to this principle.
